Highlights
More information
The Moors called Lecrín Valley the Valley of Happiness — and when you arrive in the whitewashed village of Nigüelas, perched at the foot of the Sierra Nevada, you begin to understand why. Silver-green olive groves climb the hillsides here, fed by acequias: ancient Moorish irrigation channels that have carried snowmelt down from the peaks for over a thousand years. This is a full-day escape from Granada into the rhythms of Andalusian country life, guided by a local who was born here, built the estate you'll visit, and tends the trees whose oil you'll taste.
Your morning begins with a walk through the village, visiting its communal olive oil mill and a Moorish cistern still connected to the original water network. From there, you'll wander a sun-drenched olive grove as your guide, a trained oleologist, explains the patience required to coax flavor from the fruit.
The tasting that follows is held right among the trees. You'll learn to detect the peppery finish and nuanced aromas that mark this particular terroir.
Then the afternoon shifts from grove to kitchen. In a hands-on cooking class, you'll prepare traditional Andalusian dishes using vegetables pulled that morning from your guide's own garden.
Lunch is the meal you've just made, served outdoors on the estate with local wine and, naturally, plenty of olive oil. It's the kind of afternoon where conversation lingers longer than planned, the Sierra Nevada sharp and white on the horizon, and every dish on the table has a story rooted in the soil beneath your feet.
